About The Coaches

The Way to Win Coaches are experienced basketball athletes, who continue to maintain a level of fitness in their life. They exemplify high standards, adhering to a strict Code of Ethics. Their personal integrity shows them to be role models, true leaders empowering others to realize their full potential on and off the court.

Photo of Barbara BerryBarbara Berry...is founder and president of The Way to Win. A UW graduate, studied Kinesiology, Sports Medicine and Sports Psychology. She was a starting point guard, played semi-pro and internationally after college. Barbara has over thirty years of high school and college level coaching and teaching experience. From 2002-2005 she was the Director of the Maple Valley Basketball Youth League and the Head Girl's Basketball Coach at Tahoma HS. Barbara was sponsored by Adidas to teach leadership seminars to children and adults throughout the US. She is the author of "The Golden Rules of Basketball, Fundamentals, Drills and Philosophies."

She played in the 1998 Nike World Masters Games and in the UW Husky's Alumni games in 2002 and 2004. Her other passions include hiking, golfing, cross-country skiing, mountain biking, sailing and, of course, coaching and playing basketball.

A thought provoking speaker at schools and other community groups inspiring individuals, coaches and players on and off the court by focusing on perceptions, long term vision building, effective communication and leadership skills.                        Head Coach Gold Team-11th year


Nate Yokers...a Tyee High School graduate, was a 3 year starter named to the All-Seamount 1st team Senior year. At Edmonds Community College in 2004-2005, he earned the team's Most Improved Player and Best Defender awards. In 2006-2007 at Northwest University he earned All American Academic Honors and they finished 4th in the nation. At one point during that season he was ranked 3rd in the nation in 3 point shooting percentage. 

Nate began coaching for The Way to Win in 2001. He also coached for the Northwest Basketball Camps (NBC) from 2000-2003, was Assistant JV coach at Highline High School and volunteered for the Maple Valley Youth League in 2001.

Nate loves working with kids and teaching basketball. He also enjoys most sports, the outdoors, traveling, and spending time with his family. He is currently working in Accounting & Finance as an investor in Kirkland. Nate was recently married to Abby in December 2008 and they live in Bothell, WA.

Amy Corder...is from North Bend, Washington. She is a Mount Si High School Graduate, 1993 who played basketball,soccer,and softball. Amy coached four summers at Northwest Basketball Camp. A graduate from Whitworth College with a BA in Sports Medicine, a BA in Physical Education, Education Certificate and minors in Health and Math where she played basketball and soccer.

Amy taught PE, health, and math at Tahoma Junior High for more than six years and coached basketball. She also coached fastpitch and track at the junior high.

Amy is married to Jim with two daughters. She enjoys mountain biking, skiing, snowshoeing, and camping.

 Todd Derifield... is a Monroe High School graduate, played 3 years there all league and all area team. Received scholarship to Wenatchee Valley CC.  He has coached at Monroe and Sultan High Schools as a assistant coach and has coached in Monroe Cyclones and Bearcat programs since 1987. 
 
Todd enjoys working with kids and teaching them basketball. He also enjoys spending time with his family at our cabin, golfing, skiing, and traveling.
 
Todd is married to Carolyn and has two children Shelby and Brandon and lives in Monroe/Snohomish, WA

Desiree "Dez" Phelps... has been coaching basketball & volleyball for 17 years. A graduate of Central Washington University where she played all four years, Dez also had the opportunity to play in Australia, Scotland, Ireland & England. After college she coached for 2 years at Ephrata High School, and 8 years at Manson High School.

Desiree is currently coaching Training's in Chelan, WA. 

Desiree enjoys running, biking, camping, relaxing on their dock on Lake Chelan, and other family activities. Desiree's passion is teaching girls the game of basketball through positive self talk, motivation, and goal setting.

married to Frank and has four amazing children and runs a small book keeping company. They live in Manson, WA

Alyssa Smith...attends Archbiship Murphy High School graduating in 2009. Played varsity basketball and volleyball all four years . Two time MVP of the Cascade Conference and 1st team all state 2009. McDonalds All-American nominee 2009. Played in the State Championship game and placed 2nd in 2009.

Received a Scholarship to attend the University of Montana to play basketball beginning in the Fall 2009. Besides basketball Alyssa enjoys hangng out with her friends and family.

Lindsey Moore...attends Kentwood HS graduating in 2009. Starter all 4 years. Two time MVP Wesco 4A. State Champions and MVP 2009. Seattle Times All Area Team, Gatorade All Star, Parade All American & selected to Tryout for the U19 USA Team.

Received a Scholarship to attend University of Nebraska to play basketball beginning in the Fall 2009. Besides basketball Lindsey enjoys listening to music and hanging out with her friends.
